Red Plague is damaging corrosion in wires

Cirris, the cable and harness testing folks, have recently made all of us in the wiring industry better aware of Red Plague. They help us understand what it is, what are the causes and how to understand the factors that lead to Red Plague…

What is Red Plague?

Red Plague, or cupros oxide, is the name given to the corrosion effect found in silver plated copper wire. Most often it is seen as spots of brown or red on the silver plating.

Red Plague forms when the silver plating is damaged, exposing the copper wire to moisture or high temperatures. The copper wire begins to corrode resulting in irreversible destruction. Eventually the copper can dissolve completely, leaving behind the damaged silver plating shell. The sliver plating alone cannot perform without the copper wire interior, thus rendering the wire nonfunctional.

What causes Red Plague?

Researchers are still working toward finding a cause and solution for Red Plague. So far they have determined certain factors that contribute to the problem.

• Damage to the wire, plating, or insulation

• Humid conditions

• High temperatures

• Chemical exposure

Some of these factors can be prevented through care and diligence.

• Make sure you are using high quality silver plated copper wire.

• Avoid over-handling the wires.

• Keep the wire stored in a clean and dry environment.

Absolute Quality at D2P (Design To Part)

Jim CrawfordAbsolute Quality had a great time at the recent D2P (Design To Part) show at the convention center in Minneapolis. We met with a lot of OEM’s to discuss their application needs for cable assemblies, wire harness, panels and enclosure assemblies. We came up with a few solutions for folks and heard from happy customers.

You can see Account Manager Jim Crawford just as we finished setting up and the conference doors opened.
